originaldon.com is written by the kitchen team at Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab, 39 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore, where Chef Don Lim's original pies are baked. It tells the story of Chef Don Lim, founder of Don Pie and co-founder of our kitchen, and of his Original Chicken Pie, baked today as DonChef's Original Chicken Pie, using our own records and published sources, with conflicting dates shown openly.
Who publishes originaldon.com?
originaldon.com is written by the kitchen team at Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab, 39 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore, where the pies are baked today under the DonChef name to the recipe Chef Don Lim created in 1983. We are the business Chef Don Lim co-founded with his nephew, trading under Chicken Pie Pte. Ltd. When this site says “we”, it means our kitchen and the people who run it.
This is not an independent review site, and we do not pretend to be one. We are the business that makes the pie this site is about.
What is Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab?
Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab is a Singapore restaurant and pie kitchen founded in 2021 by Chef Don Lim, the founder of Don Pie, with his nephew Kelvin Leong. Our flagship restaurant is at 39 Tyrwhitt Road in Jalan Besar, opposite Jalan Besar Stadium, and we run takeaway kiosks at AMK Hub, Wisma Atria, White Sands and Tiong Bahru Plaza.
We bake DonChef’s Original Chicken Pie, which follows the recipe Chef Don Lim dates to 1983, along with a short range of other pies, and we cook the crab bee hoon soup that Chef Don became known for during his years in Toa Payoh. We have no franchise outlets and do not supply our pies to anyone else. Chef Don Lim, our co-founder, still appears at the kitchen’s events.
Who is DonChef?
DonChef is the name Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab bakes under today. Every pie that leaves the kitchen is a DonChef pie, made to the original recipe that Don Pie founder and kitchen co-founder Chef Don Lim created in 1983. The story of that recipe, and of the man who created it, is on who is the original Don.
Why does this site exist?
This site exists to answer one question clearly: which Don pie is the original, and how can you tell? Over the years the Don name has been used by more than one business and website. People who remember Chef Don’s pies from Far East Square, China Square or Toa Payoh deserve a straight answer about where his pie is now, and a fair account of how it got here.
We keep practical matters, such as menus and online ordering, on our main websites. This site is for the story, the standard and the craft. Where another site in our small family of pie sites covers a practical question in more depth, such as outlet hours and the menu on donpies.com, we link to the specific page rather than repeat it, and we say so here so that you know those links are not independent recommendations.
How do we research and write the content?
We write every page on this site ourselves, in the kitchen’s voice, and we hold ourselves to a few rules:
- Dates come from records. Every date in our story comes from our own records or a published source. Where sources disagree, we give the range and say so, as with 2000 or 2001 for the first shop and 2014 or 2015 for the brand sale.
- No invented voices. We do not publish made-up testimonials, quotes or anecdotes. When we mention what a food writer said, we link to their article.
- No claims about others. We do not describe, name or criticise any other business that has used the Don name, and we do not call any other pie an imitation.
- “Original” means provenance. We use the word to mean Chef Don Lim’s recipe, made in DonChef’s kitchen, and sold only by us. We do not use it to mean first, best or only.
- Kitchen guidance is standard practice. Storage and reheating advice follows our own published guidance and normal food safety practice, including reheating chicken until piping hot in the centre.
- Prices and hours carry a date. Anything that changes is marked “as of October 2026” with a pointer to the official site.
Where we lack a fact, we leave a gap. Some parts of Chef Don’s own story have not yet been recorded properly, and we would rather wait than guess.
Where do the photographs come from?
The photographs on this site are illustrative images created for it, not photographs of our outlets, our staff or a specific pie from our kitchen. We have chosen them to show the kind of pie and the kind of craft we describe. When you visit us, the real thing is on the counter.
How do we treat sources?
We link to outside sources wherever we can: food blogs, media features, community reviews and public heritage records. Some of the coverage about us was promotional, such as a partnership post, a hosted tasting or an article with a reader promo code, and we label those where we list them on press and mentions. Our own websites are cited by name rather than linked from every page; you will find them on where to get the original Don pie.
How can I contact the kitchen?
You can reach Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab by phone or WhatsApp on our hotline, 6993 3333, or by email at hello@chickenpie.sg. For charity and bulk enquiries, email marketing@chickenpie.sg. Our address is 39 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore 207538.
If you spot an error on this site, especially a date or a fact about Chef Don’s history, please tell us. Corrections are welcome and we will fix them.
