Our core pies are DonChef's Original Chicken Pie (which follows the recipe Chef Don Lim created in 1983), the Black Pepper Chicken Pie, the Chicken Shepherd's Pie and the Curry Pie, plus a Beef Pie and an Apple Pie. Most come in Personal (feeds one) and Whole (feeds four to six) sizes, all baked at our Tyrwhitt Road kitchen.
What pies does the original Don kitchen make?
Our kitchen at 39 Tyrwhitt Road bakes a short range of pies, and every savoury one starts from the same place: DonChef’s chicken pie and its golden, flaky crust. On our printed menu the pie section is headed with our tagline, “Singapore’s original Chicken Pie, since 1983”, and the Original Chicken Pie sits at the top.
Here is the range as it stands in October 2026, with how each pie relates to the original. Our menu changes with the seasons, so check our official ordering site for what is available today. A full price list by size is kept on the Don Pie menu and prices for 2026.
The four chicken pies
Original Chicken Pie. The original Don pie. Chef Don Lim’s recipe, developed since 1983 and baked today as DonChef’s Original Chicken Pie and, in our own words, the same recipe since the China Square days. Chunks of chicken, potato and vegetables in our spice blend, with half a hard-boiled egg, under a golden, flaky crust.
Black Pepper Chicken Pie. The same pastry as the Original, with a filling that brings an extra peppery kick. For people who like their pie to bite back.
Chicken Shepherd’s Pie. The Black Pepper Pie’s filling, topped with baked mashed potato instead of a pastry lid. Baked as a tray rather than a round pie.
Curry Pie. Chicken chunks and potato in curry spices, baked in pastry. A Singapore flavour in a Singapore pie.
Beyond chicken
Beef Pie. Our menu describes it as premium New Zealand beef, slow-cooked with a touch of wine. It is our premium pie and sits apart from the chicken family in both filling and price.
Apple Pie. Apples and nuts roasted low, with raisins and cinnamon. A sweet pie for the end of a meal, or for people who simply prefer apple.
Creamy Chicken Pie. Listed on our online ordering site with chicken thigh, mushrooms, potatoes and mixed vegetables in a cream sauce, in a puff pastry. A different pie from the Original, made for people who want something softer and creamier.
Chicken Pot Pie Combo. Baked to order at the restaurant: a personal-sized pot pie with a creamy chicken filling under a top crust, served with a salad. Allow about fifteen minutes.
Seasonal and limited pies
From time to time the kitchen bakes something for an occasion. Recent examples include a Lotus Pie for Mid-Autumn, with white lotus paste, pine nuts and salted egg yolks, and in 2024 a Moon-Pie with yam, pine nuts and salted egg yolk. A Golden Cheese Pie once began life as an April Fool’s joke. Seasonal pies come and go; the Original stays.
What sizes do the pies come in?
Most of our pies come in two sizes on our printed menu. A Personal pie feeds one. A Whole pie feeds four to six and is the one people bring to family dinners and office gatherings. If you are feeding a crowd, there is a handy calculator for how many pies per person to order. The Chicken Pot Pie Combo is made in a single personal size.
How do the pies compare?
| Pie | Filling | Top | Relation to the Original |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Chicken Pie | Chicken chunks, potato, vegetables, half an egg | Golden, flaky crust | The original |
| Black Pepper Chicken Pie | Peppery chicken filling | Same crust as the Original | Same pastry, bolder seasoning |
| Chicken Shepherd’s Pie | Black Pepper Pie filling | Baked mashed potato | Shares the Black Pepper filling |
| Curry Pie | Chicken chunks and potato in curry spices | Pastry | A local-flavour sibling |
| Beef Pie | New Zealand beef, slow-cooked with wine | Pastry | A premium cousin |
| Apple Pie | Roasted apple, nuts, raisins, cinnamon | Pastry | The sweet one |
